  • Fresh flint rough initially, then smooths out

    A fresh flint will always be hard to spark the first few times - The end of the flint is kind of rough and bumpy. After a few sparks the flint wheel will start to cut into the flint, leaving a smooth curved surface. The flint wheel glides across that much easier, relying on the pressure from the flint spring to push the flint into the wheel, grinding the metal and generating sparks.
